The Office of Insurance, Loss Control and Claims purchases the property and casualty (liability) insurance for the University. This includes general liability, auto liability, cyber liability, property, educators’ legal liability, and medical malpractice.
The first layer of coverage for claims (apart from medical malpractice) is our self–insured retention. Most of the claims are processed under this layer. Once the claim exceeds the retention it goes to our captive insurance layer through Old Crescent Insurance Company. If a claim would exceed the retention under the captive, then the claim would go to the commercial excess policies. Medical malpractice is first dollar coverage under the captive insurance policy before accessing the Indiana Patient Compensation Fund.
We also process the medical claims for our student athletes across all the campuses.
