Insurance Charges for Rental Car Coverage
Depending on the vendor used, IU is faced with varying amounts of potential liability arising from the use of rental vehicles. Because of contractual arrangements with Enterprise and National, the liability exposure is less than we face with other rental car companies.
For many years this cost was absorbed by the Motor Pool. We (INLOCC) now bill individual departments for the cost of vehicle insurance and, as an outgrowth of that, bill users of rental vehicles their share of the cost of insurance.
The costs per day are:
Enterprise: $1.47
National: $2.69
All others: $4.65
These rates are subject to change depending on contracts with the rental car companies and insurance costs.
These charges are added (and automatically taken from your account) after your trip when your information is submitted to Travel Management.
Should I reject the insurance offered by the rental car company?
In the United States and Canada, always. In most other instances, no. We now recommend you purchase the offered coverage for liability and/or damage to the vehicle when renting outside North America. The credit card you use to rent the vehicle may offer coverage. You should determine this before traveling as this may lower your expenses.
