Two types of fire extinguisher training are offered by INLOCC:
E–Train is an online module available to all members of the IU community. Access via CAS login is required.
- Start: https://one.iu.edu/task/iu/e-training
- Click Start
- Open the fire extinguisher course
Depending on your browser, the course may be opened in a new window. Clicking a link in the presentation may open a new tab in your original browser window. You haven’t lost the course — just find the window it’s in and proceed.
- Hands–on training
Hands–on training includes the use of a burn pot and hand–held extinguishers. Class size is kept to a maximum of twenty people so everyone gets a chance to handle an extinguisher.
If you become aware of a fire
- sound the alarm then, if you can,
- call 911,
- then exit the building.
If the fire is small (e.g., a wastebasket fire) and you have received extinguisher training, you may elect to use an extinguisher. Do not put yourself or others at risk!
The mechanics of operating an extinguisher are not difficult, but there are techniques (such as proper pointing) that are important. Learn the proper use of an extinguisher by taking one of our classes.
